antique-american-jacquard-coverlet-fern-oak-leaf
Mid-19th-Century American Jacquard Coverlet with Fern and Oak Leaf Design

An American Jacquard coverlet dating to around 1850–1870, handwoven in a substantial two-ply double weave of hand-spun wool. Fern fronds, oak leaves and acorns surround a central medallion. The design is reversible, with madder red and indigo blue-black exchanging places on the opposite face.

These deep colours also speak to the work involved before weaving began. In historical domestic dyeing, an indigo vat could produce the blue yarn; a subsequent bath with madder, or with logwood or walnut and an iron mordant known as copperas, could alter its shade. The precise dyes and sequence used for this coverlet have not been established.

One corner was cut away in the past and the cut edge finished by hand with blanket stitch. Its original purpose is not documented; it may have been altered to fit around a bedpost. The alteration gives the coverlet a distinctive outline, visible in the photographs. It could be displayed folded or draped, rather than used as a conventional full bedcover.

Made in the United States, possibly in the Mid-Atlantic region, such as Pennsylvania or Ohio. Measures 173 × 190 cm.
