early-19th-century-french-composite-quilt-les-monuments-de-paris-toile
Early 19th-Century French Composite Quilt with Les Monuments de Paris Toile

An early 19th-century French composite quilt made by stitching a period copper-roller-printed cotton panel of Les Monuments de Paris onto a Provençal piqué quilt. The plum-coloured toile design dates to 1816 and was drawn by the French architect Louis-Hippolyte Lebas, engraved by Nicolas-Auguste Leisnier and printed at the Oberkampf factory at Jouy-en-Josas. Its architectural scenes, set within frames include The Fountain of the Innocents, The East Colonnade of The Louvre, The Pont Neuf and The Panthéon. Printing a detailed, repeating architectural design from an engraved copper roller was a technically demanding process. The 1816 date belongs to the design, not necessarily to the later alteration of the quilt.

The toile panel is hosted by an older quit with a cream cotton border hand-block-printed with small red and blue floral sprigs. The piqué quilt beneath has dense hand quilting forming concentric medallions and geometric grids, visible on the reverse. The contrast between the roller-printed toile and block-printed border is part of its interest.

The toile panel has some damage in a stained area towards the centre, including some holes as seen in the photos. Some splits on the front have been repaired, so the damage is less extensive there, but the holes remain and go right through the quilt. They are visible from both faces, more clearly on the reverse, where the damage has been left unmended and the central staining is more apparent. There is a separate large stain or water mark near a top corner of the floral border. The quilting remains largely intact, but the damage makes this a fragile piece. Best suited to careful display or textile study rather than regular use; professional advice would be sensible before hanging or cleaning it. Unwashed and untreated.

France, quilt probably assembled c. 1830–1840 using a repurposed toile panel. The quilt measures 125 x 152 cm.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0777/2884/2001/files/IMG_8830_9df698f6-ca3c-4b6e-ba66-d3289b9ea069.jpg?v=1790526507
https://www.penelopetextiles.com/products/early-19th-century-french-composite-quilt-les-monuments-de-paris-toile
