Measuring approximately 94 × 92 cm (37 × 36.2 inches), it combines the formal symmetry of European Baroque design with Indian botanical decoration and textile craftsmanship.

The composition is arranged around repeating architectural columns, classical stone-like urns and geometric Renaissance-style strapwork cartouches. The underlying pattern was printed onto the fine cotton canvas ground using hand-carved woodblocks, establishing the layout for the embroidery.

The panel is worked entirely in fine, mercerised cotton embroidery threads of DMC type, rather than wool or silk. The needle embroidery follows the Western tradition, using dense surface satin stitch and long-and-short filling stitches. The fine cotton threads allow a close, flat and highly detailed surface, with painterly bouquets of roses, carnations and forget-me-nots rising from the urns.

Crimson, terracotta, ochre and ice blue create a vivid palette, framed by an indigo-dyed cotton border. The combination of hand-block-printed groundwork and freehand needle embroidery is an important feature of the piece, bringing together two distinct stages of its making.

The panel is complete, unused and in exceptionally well-preserved condition. The cotton embroidery remains intact throughout, with no thread loss, pulled stitches, fibre thinning or moth damage. The colours remain vibrant, with no fading or colour bleeding.

The cotton ground remains strong and crisp, retaining its original structural stiffness. The untrimmed blue border is intact, without water stains, signs of use, storage spots or old mounting holes. The panel remains unaltered and is suitable for supported display or conservation framing.

https://www.penelopetextiles.com/products/large-scale-19th-century-indian-zardozi-openwork-silk-embroidered-panel-180x190cm-copy
