Unusual late 19th-century Ottoman Turkish panel, worked in silk and cotton atma couching on linen. Mirrored architectural niches, tulips and cypress motifs frame dense floral scrollwork. Very good condition: strong, supple ground and almost fully preserved embroidery, with light age-toning and a small corner fray outside the design. Measures 60 × 112 cm.
An unusual late nineteenth-century Ottoman Turkish embroidered panel, associated with northwestern Anatolia. Its densely worked design and mirrored architectural motifs distinguish it from many more familiar forms of Turkish embroidery. Measuring 60 × 112 cm (approximately 23.6 × 44.1 inches), it was made for decorative or ceremonial domestic use, possibly as an alcove hanging, a devotional prayer panel or a furniture drape.
At each end, a pointed architectural niche encloses stylised tulips and cypress motifs. Between them, the central field is filled with a flowing, symmetrical arrangement of scrolling acanthus leaves, large rosettes and multi-petalled blossoms. Slate blue, soft salmon pink, terracotta and sage green form a harmonious palette against the natural hand-spun linen ground.
The silk and cotton embroidery is worked in the traditional Turkish atma couching stitch, producing a close, low-relief surface. The detail remains clearly defined, with almost all of the stitching preserved and very little thread loss in the main field.
The panel is in very good antique condition. The linen ground remains strong and supple, without significant splitting or rot, and the embroidery is exceptionally clean. There is light natural age-toning to the ground and a small area of fraying at the lower corner margin, clear of the stitched design. This can be kept outside the visible area when appropriately mounted or framed.
