French piqué quilt, c. 1800. Block-printed floral face in madder pinks and purples; white reverse with raised corded geometric and heart-shaped motifs. 147 × 170 cm.
A French piqué quilt of around 1800, with a fine block-printed cotton face scattered with floral sprigs in madder purple, deep pink, and ochre with a surround of picotage. The printed side gives way to quite different work on the reverse.
The white reverse is an excellent example of piqué de Marseille, with closely stitched channels and zigzag panels raised by trapunto work to form a pronounced, three-dimensional surface. Parallel lines frame large padded heart shaped motifs at the corners. The definition of the trapunto work is particularly clear in the detail photographs, and makes the reverse every bit as compelling as the printed face.
There are some areas of wear to the face of the quilt along with a mark at the edge of the white reverse border and faint storage marks elsewhere on that side, as shown in the photographs. The quilt is in wonderful condition for it's age.
