Description and Details

An Ottoman Turkish ceremonial presentation pouch, or kese, dating to approximately 1880–1900, during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II (1876–1909). Its envelope-shaped form combines raised Maraş embroidery with a densely worked metallic ground, original needle-lace edging, silk tassels and long suspension cords.

The central design depicts the Sultan’s imperial calligraphic tughra, or royal monogram, accompanied by a crescent enclosing three star motifs. Stylised scrolling borders frame the composition. Raised cream-gilt thread details contrast with the closely couched, shimmering metallic purl-wire ground, giving the embroidery depth and definition.

Pouches of this kind were used for ceremonial presentation within wealthy households and courtly settings, including the presentation of correspondence, gifts or alms. The imperial motifs form part of the pouch’s design; they do not, on their own, establish that this particular piece belonged to the court.

The perimeter retains its original Bibila, or oya, metallic needle-lace edging. Worked by hand with a sewing needle and fine, crinkled metallic wire, the knotted stitches form a delicate sequence of springy loops. The lower pointed edge is finished with its original silk tassels, while long, twisted metallic-silk cords complete the pouch.

It is in excellent antique condition. The metallic-thread ground remains structurally stable, with an even bronze-gold patina and very little oxidation. The raised Maraş embroidery is crisp and complete, with no missing sections or pulled threads.

The delicate metallic lace is intact and securely attached, without fraying or broken wires. The pouch remains supple and sound, with no dry splitting or wear along the seams. Its original tassels and cords remain firmly attached.

The pouch measures approximately 20 × 30 cm, including the tassels but excluding the cords.
