A DMC cross stitch kit to recreate Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring — painted around 1665 and often called the ‘Mona Lisa of the North’, though the comparison sells it slightly short.
Where the Mona Lisa keeps its distance, Vermeer’s girl turns towards us, caught in the act of looking back over her shoulder, her lips just parted. The turban, the earring, the extraordinary luminosity of her skin against the dark background — it is one of the most intimate and quietly electrifying portraits in Western art. The fact that nobody knows who she was only adds to the fascination. Stitched on black 14-count Aida, the dark ground is built in from the start, allowing the delicate colours of her face and the pearl to emerge just as Vermeer intended.
The finished embroidery measures 15.4 x 24.6 cm.
The kit includes:
52 m of Mouliné Spécial® threads on an organiser
1 x 14-count black Aida fabric, 30 x 40 cm (100% cotton)
1 x needle
Instructions in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Japanese
