This is a different proposition to the large patchwork plaid throws — here you work directly onto a generous piece of checked blue linen, embroidering the letters at intervals across the cloth and finishing the edges with natural linen lace. The checked weave of the linen guides your stitching beautifully, making this an ideal project for beginners and a pleasingly relaxed one for more experienced embroiderers. The finished throw has the quiet, personal quality of something truly handmade — an heirloom in the making.

• A piece of checkered blue 32-count linen, 90 cm x 1.80 m
• 3 cards of Retors du Nord embroidery thread in mandarine and nattier blue
