Description and Details

A DMC British Museum cross stitch kit to recreate one of the most recognisable images ever made — Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa, first published in the late Edo period between 1829 and 1833 as the opening print in his celebrated series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.

The image is so familiar it can be easy to forget how extraordinary it is: a towering, claw-fingered wave bearing down on three small fishing boats, with the serene, snow-capped peak of Fuji diminished to a distant triangle in the background. It was among the first Japanese works to achieve widespread acclaim in the Western world, and it has never lost its power. Stitching it in Mouliné Spécial threads on ecru Aida gives the image a wonderful warmth and texture that print alone cannot replicate.

This kit is produced in collaboration with the British Museum, which has held Hokusai’s works in its collection since the nineteenth century.

The finished embroidery measures 36 x 26 cm.

The kit includes:

  • 140 m of Mouliné Spécial® threads on an organiser
  • 1 x 14-count ecru Aida fabric, 56 x 46 cm (100% cotton)
  • 1 x needle
  • Instructions in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Japanese

You will find the companion Great Wave bookmark kit, the Red Fuji kit, and the full range of DMC art cross stitch kits in my shop.
