A beautiful Sajou boxed kit to make a cushion inspired by one of the most poignant objects in French royal history — a tapestry worked in petit point by Marie-Antoinette and Madame Élisabeth, the youngest sister of Louis XVI, during their imprisonment.
The tapestry was sewn in fragments as the royal family were moved between prisons — first the Tuileries, and later the Temple, where they were held from June 1791 to August 1792. It is a remarkable act of quiet dignity and creative persistence in the most desperate of circumstances. After the Revolution, during the reign of Louis XVIII, the Duchess of Angoulême gathered all the surviving pieces together and had them united with a border — the tapestry exists today as a testament to the women who made it.
The motif measures 347 x 266 stitches, giving a finished cushion size of approximately 57.8 x 44.3 cm on 12-count linen.
