A DMC cross stitch kit to recreate Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night — painted in 1889 during his voluntary stay at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, and now one of the most beloved paintings in the world.

Van Gogh painted it from memory, working from the view through his asylum window at night and infusing it with something far beyond observation: a sky alive with swirling energy, a cypress reaching upward like a dark flame, a village lying quiet below a cosmos that seems almost to breathe. It is a painting of extraordinary emotional intensity made during one of the most difficult periods of his life, and its power has never diminished. Rendered in cross stitch, the swirling blues and the rhythm of Van Gogh’s characteristic brushwork translate beautifully into thread.

The finished embroidery measures approximately 35 x 28 cm.

• 1 x 14-count Aida fabric, 48 x 42 cm (100% cotton)
