A DMC cross stitch kit to recreate Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen’s iconic 1896 lithograph for Le Chat Noir — the legendary cabaret of Montmartre, and one of the most famous posters of the Art Nouveau era.

Le Chat Noir was the bohemian heart of 1890s Paris: a meeting place for artists, poets, anarchists and writers, presided over by a large black cat. Steinlen’s poster — that magnificent, imperious feline staring out from a field of deep gold — captured its spirit perfectly and became one of the defining images of the Belle Époque. Steinlen himself was a politically engaged Swiss-French artist who collaborated with the anarchist press and documented Parisian working-class life; this poster is his most enduring legacy. On ecru Aida, the warm golden tones of the original translate beautifully into cross stitch.

The finished embroidery measures 25.6 x 34.4 cm.
