A beautiful Sajou basketweave needlepoint tapestry kit inspired by the French cement tiles that were fashionable throughout France in the mid-nineteenth century. This design is named after Mirabel, one of the villages of the Ardèche region that was known for producing these distinctive patterned tiles.
The chart comprises three elements — a motif, a border and a corner — each of which is repeating, so you can make your tapestry as large or as small as you wish. On a 5.2 mono canvas each element measures approximately 3.8 cm, making it straightforward to calculate the canvas you need based on the number of motifs and borders you want to sew.
Basketweave needlepoint is a wonderful technique if you love the results of cross stitch but find the finer count fabrics increasingly difficult to see — the warp and weft of the canvas are much easier to follow, and the stitching is quicker and deeply satisfying.
The kit includes:
A3 printed chart and instructions
Cards of Laine St Pierre tapestry wool in the colours required
25 cm square of 5.2 mono canvas
You will find the other cement tile basketweave designs — Lagorce, Villedieu and Sauzet — in my shop.
