Description and Details

A beautiful Sajou cross stitch kit containing two charts for two separate embroideries, each depicting a scene from the Bayeux Tapestry.

The first shows Aelfgyva — the only woman to appear anywhere in the entire tapestry. She stands in a doorway, a cleric beside her, and her presence in the narrative has puzzled historians for nearly a thousand years. Her identity remains unknown, and the scene has been interpreted variously as a diplomatic alliance, a scandal, or a deliberate slight against the Anglo-Saxons. Whatever the truth, she is a tantalising enigma in an otherwise male-dominated story — and one can only wish we had her side of it.

The second chart depicts the coronation of King Harold following the death of King Edward — the moment that set the Conquest in motion.

Each motif measures 88 x 73 points, giving a finished size of approximately 15 x 12.5 cm on 32-count linen. The charts are printed in matt finish so that notes and references can be written directly onto them.

The kit includes:

  • Two printed pattern charts
  • 7 cards of Laine St Pierre embroidery wool
  • Two pieces of 32-count sand linen embroidery fabric

You will find the full range of Bayeux Tapestry scene kits, pot kits and the large kit in my shop, along with other embroidery designs inspired by the historical textile collections of France’s great châteaux and museums.
