A large white linen presentation sheet, c. 1905, with a deep scalloped Branscombe point lace border, drawn-thread ladder hemstitching and a padded hand-embroidered monogram. Substantial, slightly slubby linen in immaculate antique condition. Measures 360 × 240 cm; suitable as a top sheet or layered bed covering.
A generously proportioned antique linen presentation sheet, dating to around 1900–1910, with a deep Branscombe point lace border and a hand-embroidered monogram. Measuring 360 × 240 cm (approximately 142 × 94 inches), it combines substantial white flax linen with finely worked lace.
The linen is heavy, with a slightly slubby texture. Around the scalloped border, a continuous woven tape has been shaped by hand into flowing floral trails, with needle-made wheels and mesh fillings creating a variety of openwork patterns. A broad line of drawn-thread ladder hemstitching separates the lace from the main linen field. It is a lovely example of the Branscombe lace tradition associated with Devon.
The interlocking monogram is worked in heavily padded satin stitch, also known as point de plumetis, with a delicate botanical spray and trailing stem stitch. The initials appear to read WR, or possibly MR.
In immaculate antique condition, with crisp white linen and sound fabric and lace. Its generous dimensions make it suitable for use as a top sheet or a layered bed covering, allowing the deep lace border to fall over the sides. At 240 cm wide, the amount of drape will depend on the width and depth of your mattress.
