Description and Details

An antique Victorian hand painted Berlin woolwork embroidery chart of two floral motifs.

The chart has been cut and the artists name is missing.

The grid area of the chart measures approximately;
7 x 5 inches/ 17.5 x 125 cm

This chart has an interesting provenance. It came to me as part of a collection that included embroidery and knitting charts from the 1840's- 1870's along with some beautifully hand drawn whitework embroidery designs from 1810's- 1830's and a draft of poetry.

Tucked in the collection was a calling card of 'Mrs Thomas Henry Wyatt, 77 Great Russel Street'. Hand written on the calling card is 'Miss F Milles 6 Kent Street'.

Mrs Thomas Henry Wyatt was Arabella Montagu Wyatt, first cousin and wife of the celebrated Architect Thomas Henry Wyatt (1807- 1880), A blue plaque in his honour now marks this London address.

The hand written name and address on the card would indicate that perhaps Miss Milles wrote her address on one of Arabella's cards whilst a being a guest at 6 Kent Street (which at the time was the home of Shirley Brooks who was editor of Punch magazine), hence why she had no card of her own to leave and wrote on one of Arabella's own cards instead.

Arabella Montagu Wyatt is only known in public records for being Thomas Henry Wyatt's wife. Her calling card will tell you that she is his wife, but not what her name is. Her portrait shows a young, dark haired woman dressed in the romantic style.

The collection tells another story, she ; was intelligent, artistic, creative and probably very highly accomplished with the needle to boot.

Materials: Paper, Hand Painted.
