A beautifully worked and very rare example of darned hand embroidery.
The cloth has a damask of stars and the border is worked all around the edges of the cloth with motifs of Renaissance style figures hunting raised hand embroidered monogram of 'H.B.' to the center of the cloth.
The darned embroidery is worked as well as any darned sample, the reverse is as neat as the front and the floating threads are expertly worked into the cloth. The stitches are tiny, so much so that the cloth looks as though the border has been woven, the cloth must have been blinding to work.
This is the only example of this style of embroidery, worked to this standard that I have come across that has not been worked onto a darning sample as made in schools in the 1700 & 1800's
The cloth came to me beautifully laundered and starched and has not been re laundered.
The table cloth is in excellent, barely used condition and measures; 84 x 72.5 cm/ 33 x 28.5 inches square.
