Description and Details

This rare, horizontal Coptic tapestry band fragment is from Egypt and dates to around 650–750 AD, in the Late Byzantine or Early Islamic period. It is woven using hand-spun wool weft on a linen warp.

The lively figural frieze is worked in terracotta red, dark brown and cream. Stylised dancing human figures and animals caught mid-stride sit between decorative borders, their forms woven tightly into the warp. The band may have been detached from the sleeve or neckline of a high-status tunic.

The figures and their arrangement show Coptic art moving towards geometric and narrative patterns during the 7th and 8th centuries. The fragment is classified as a Coptic tapestry band, made using tapestry weaving.

The fragment measures 10.5 x 6.5 cm
