Description and Details

A large Edwardian Irish linen bedspread, circa 1905, combining raised whitework embroidery with extensive bands of Reticella lace. Measuring 254 × 292cm, it is worked on a substantial linen ground and finished entirely by hand.

A deeply raised central medallion is embroidered in heavily padded satin stitch, with botanical motifs and trailing scrollwork. The botanical design is repeated through the broad inner border and wide outer valance, giving the embroidery a cohesive layout across the cloth.

Bands of geometric Reticella lace frame the embroidery. The grids are filled with wheels, buttonholed picot bars and star motifs, with multi-lobed floral inserts at the corners. The contrast between the raised stitching and the open lacework is a particularly striking feature.

In immaculate, crisp condition.
