Description and Details

This antique liturgical chalice veil is dated to around 1680–1740, in the late 17th to early 18th century. Its origin is attributed to continental Europe, most probably Italy, and it is associated with specialised convent or workshop embroidery for Catholic liturgy. The ground is described as silk velvet or heavy satin, worked with gilt-metal bullion wire and polychrome floss silk.

At the centre, a fleur-de-lis cross is worked in raised gold- and silver-coloured metal thread using couching. Hand-worked, tied bouquets of silk tulips sit in the corners, framed by scrolling acanthus leaves and Baroque borders. Tulips were a luxury status symbol in 17th and early 18th-century Europe, adding a striking floral note to the design.

The reverse remains exposed and unlined, revealing the original tension strings and structural hand-knotting. Measuring 24 × 26 cm, the veil offers a clear view of both its decoration and construction.

It is in stable, unrestored antique condition. The face shows age-related surface staining and water marks, with oxidation to the metallic elements. The embroidery is described as well preserved, with no major thread loss or structurally compromising fraying.
