Description and Details

This figured silk velvet panel is attributed to Italy and dated to about 1650. Venice or Genoa are possibilities, but the precise place of manufacture is not known.

The panel is draw-loom woven as figured cut velvet, with a silk pile on a woven silk ground. A dense pattern of pomegranates, grape clusters and sweeping acanthus leaves appears in deep crimson against a golden-wheat ground. The raised pile gives the design a richly textured surface that shifts as it catches the light.

A compact example of 17th-century figured silk weaving, measuring approximately 20 × 28 cm.
