French piqué quilt attributed to the late 18th century. Block-printed bird and floral front, contrasting floral reverse; substantial fabric loss to the reverse. 135 × 150 cm.
A French piqué quilt with a hand-block-printed cotton front, attributed to the late 18th century. Long-tailed birds sit among trailing branches with foliage and flowers in madder red, pink, plum and brown against a cream ground. The small, irregular dots in the background are consistent with the stippled detail found in block-printed indiennes.
The reverse has a contrasting brown floral print: large aster-like flower heads within a dotted hexagon grid, framed by purple leaf trails. Hand quilting forms a diamond lattice across the body, with floral motifs to the edges and corners.
The bird-printed front retains strong colour, though there are areas of wear shown in the photographs. The centre of the reverse has substantial wear and loss of printed cotton, exposing the white cotton wadding, with older mends visible. This is best considered for display with the bird-printed face showing rather than for regular use. Unwashed and untreated.
France, attributed to c. 1780–1795. Measures 135 × 150 cm.
