Description and Details

This antique Paris Fashions magazine is a superb Belle Époque fashion reference, offering an authentic snapshot of Parisian dress and textile culture in early 1902. Paris Fashions was produced as the English translated companion to the iconic French magazine La Nouvelle Mode, giving international readers access to French couture trends, illustrated fashion reporting, and needlework inspiration at the height of Europe’s fashion influence.

The bilingual structure is part of what makes these issues so collectible. In this edition, the first four pages are translated into English, after which the magazine continues as the full French issue in its entirety. That format preserves the original French publishing style while making the opening content accessible for English speaking collectors, researchers, and designers.

This issue is clearly dated 22 February 1902 and marked Volume IX, No. 216 on the front cover. Inside, the French edition repeats the same date and is labelled Neuvième année, No. 8 (Ninth year, No. 8). These identifiers provide strong provenance and help collectors position the magazine accurately within the series.

Beyond its historical value, this number is packed with practical creative material. Alongside period fashion illustrations, articles, and adverts, it contains embroidery designs and includes two original making resources: an original paper pattern plus a charted dressmaking pattern for a ladies night gown, complete with drafting instructions so the pattern can be recreated for modern use. That combination of visual reference and functional pattern content makes it especially appealing to costume makers and fashion historians. The magazine is stated to be in excellent condition, which is increasingly rare for paper ephemera of this age.
