Description and Details

A pot of pure beeswax from Merchant & Mills — a traditional thread conditioner with a host of uses for hand sewers and embroiderers.

Pure beeswax can be used on both cotton and wool embroidery threads to strengthen them, reduce fuzz, prevent tangling, and help the thread glide smoothly through fabric. It is traditionally used by tailors to strengthen thread for hand-sewing buttons and buttonholes, and is also invaluable in goldwork and beading, where it prevents bullion, beads, and sharp metal purl from cutting the thread.

To use: cut a manageable length of thread, press it gently against the beeswax and draw it through once, then run warm fingers along the thread to melt the thin wax coating into the fibres.

A note of caution: beeswax can slightly stiffen soft wool or cotton threads and may reduce the sheen of particularly lustrous threads, so use sparingly. Excess wax can also attract dust, particularly on dark colours.

Each pot contains approximately 20g of pure beeswax.
