Description and Details

A beautiful Sajou cross stitch kit depicting The Pledge of Bayeux — one of the most pivotal scenes in the Bayeux Tapestry.

Following the military campaigns at Rennes and Dinan, William and his knights travel to Bayeux, the episcopal seat of his half-brother Odo, shown in the tapestry as a turreted castle reached by a bridge. It is here that the famous oath takes place. William sits enthroned, sword raised, as Harold stands before him and swears fealty on two holy reliquaries set upon a draped stand — promising William the crown of England on the death of King Edward. It is a solemn and loaded moment. Harold would go on to be crowned King of England regardless, and it is this scene that William would later cite as justification for everything that followed.

The motif measures 268 x 67 points, giving a finished size of approximately 45 x 11.5 cm on 32-count linen. The chart is printed in matt finish on a large 60 x 29 cm sheet so that notes and references can be written directly onto it.

The kit includes:

  • A full-colour printed pattern chart
  • 10 cards of Laine Saint-Pierre embroidery wool: 422 x 3, 450 x 2, 648 x 2, 814 x 1, 845 x 1, 930 x 1
  • A 70 x 25 cm piece of sand-coloured 32-count linen
  • A Sajou ‘Créé par moi’ (Made by me) label
  • Presented in a reusable Sajou cardboard box

You will find the full range of Bayeux Tapestry scene kits, pot kits and the large kit in my shop, along with other embroidery designs inspired by the historical textile collections of France’s great châteaux and museums.
