Description and Details
This antique Irish linen damask tablecloth is a rare heritage piece with bold Celtic symbolism. The damask field is woven with a repeating pattern of Celtic knots paired with fleur de lys, giving the cloth a strong graphic rhythm and a subtle sheen that catches the light beautifully when laid on a table. It is the kind of statement antique linen that suits collectors, period interiors, and special occasion dining.
A standout feature is its hand woven draw loom construction. You can see the draw loom character in the checked border and the slightly pixelated look of the damask motifs, both hallmarks of older loom weaving where patterns were lifted by hand rather than by later mechanised jacquard systems. That method gives the cloth real historical integrity and makes it far less common than standard antique damask.
The decorative layout is classic and balanced: Celtic knots form the continuous borders along the edges and corners, while fleur de lys motifs anchor the centre. The cloth came to Penelope Textiles beautifully laundered and starched and has not been re laundered since, so the weave remains crisp and the pattern definition sharp. Condition is noted as excellent, meaning it is ready for use or careful storage straight away.
With generous dimensions of 269 x 223 cm (106 x 88 inches), this is ideal for a large dining table, a period sideboard, or display styling. It also works for heritage textile projects such as restoration panels or framed linen art if you prefer to preserve antique damask in a new way.
